As we approach the first anniversary of the introduction of VAT on independent schools, Headteacher Tony Oulton has shared his reflections on the impact of this policy and Bosworth’s response in the latest edition of Independent Schools Magazine.
Navigating the VAT era was a challenge for the sector, but at Bosworth, the decision was made to absorb the VAT costs entirely on behalf of parents. Tony explains that this was more than a financial decision – it was a statement of values. “We wanted to send a clear message to families that we understood the pressures they were under, and that we were committed to accessibility and affordability,” he writes.
For Bosworth, accessibility goes beyond VAT. The school offers meaningful bursary and scholarship programmes, ensuring that talent and ambition, rather than financial means, determine who benefits from the school’s education. Full bursaries are available for local day students, covering tuition, uniforms, trips, and additional costs, while initiatives such as the Language Leaders programme bring international students into local schools to enrich the wider community.
Reflecting on the year, Tony notes that Bosworth’s approach has not only supported families but also contributed to the school’s growth. By combining commercial discipline with a strong moral purpose, Bosworth has seen a 30% growth in student numbers in just twelve months. Being part of CATS Global Schools has allowed the school to sustain this model while continuing to invest in bursaries, partnerships, and initiatives that benefit both domestic and international students.
Tony concludes with a reminder of the school’s mission: “Education is the most important function society has. Our job is to make sure every child, whatever their background, has the chance to benefit from it and be transformed by it.”
