Common Questions About Bursaries
What is a Bursary?
A Bursary is a financial award provided to students to support their education at Bosworth Independent School. Whether a student qualifies for a Bursary award and the level of Bursary award they may be offered is dependent on the combined household income of those with whom the student lives. Unlike loans, Bursaries do not need to be repaid.
Who can apply for a bursary?
A parent or legal guardian applies for a Bursary on behalf of a student seeking admission to the school. Means-tested Bursaries (grants towards fees) are available for students who require additional financial support. To secure a Bursary, parents will have a joint household income of less than £50,000.
Students will also demonstrate high levels of academic attainment and potential. A student whose family apply for a Bursary will be required to sit a CAT4 assessment, just like all other applicants for a place at the school.
Applications can be submitted for students who will, in the following academic year, enter Year 7, Year 9, Year 10 or Year 12.
How is the award assessed?
The process of applying for a Bursary to fund or partially fund a place at Bosworth Independent School is designed to ensure clarity, transparency and equity. Bursaries are, of course, means-tested, which means applications are assessed against a set of criteria intended to ensure that those in most need of one will receive one. Those with a gross household income of £50,000 or less may apply. The amount of the Bursary is awarded using a sliding scale: the lower the household’s income, the higher the award, and vice versa.
Aside from household income, several other factors are taken into account when we are assessing whether a student is a suitable candidate for a Bursary.
These include:
· A student’s prior attainment and academic potential
· Their attitude to learning
· Their achievement level in the CAT4 assessment
· How they perform in an interview with a member of the school’s Senior Leadership Team.
Only candidates who secure a mean CAT4 score of 120 (with no less than 115 in any specific battery) and achieve a stanine score of 8 will be considered for a Bursary. The student’s latest report from their current school will be requested.
Families wishing to apply for a Bursary must accept that a thorough assessment of their current assets, income and expenditure is required. To ensure that this is handled with transparency, rigour, sensitivity and compliance in the matter of GDPR regulations, Bosworth Independent School uses a company called BAL to handle the paperwork required for this part of the process. More information about BAL can be found here: https://www.schoolbursaryguide.com
Once BAL has undertaken their analysis of a household’s financial situation, the school then applies its internal criteria for awarding bursaries. Those who have applied for a Bursary are not guaranteed one. However, if having read this you feel you meet the essential criteria, we encourage you to apply.
How and when to apply
Applications remain open for as long a period a time as possible to allow for families to apply. A note will be posted on this page when Bursaries for the forthcoming academic year are no longer available.
If you are interested in applying for Bursary, please mention this when contacting the school and applying for a place. You will then be sent a link to apply for a bursary.
Please note: the bursary application is a two-step process, and both steps must be completed in a timely fashion. Only one reminder will be sent; failure to meet the deadline, or to complete all parts of the application, or to engage honestly with BAL will result in the application being rejected by the school.
Confidentiality
The School respects the confidentiality of all awards made to families, and recipients are expected to do likewise.
